A Letter from the president
In 1976, I was invited to the Far East to learn the process of making hand tufted custom area rugs with the idea of marketing this product in the United States. The industry was new at that time with only two manufacturers here in the states. They were very expensive and therefore limited to only those who could afford this high quality product. The hospitality market wanted to use custom wool rugs in their lobbies since wool is inherently fire retardant and would withstand extreme high traffic. The Far East would be able to make these custom rugs for a fraction of the cost using New Zealand wool. The quality was so superior, and the price after importing was so appealing that the entire idea took off. We started offering our all wool custom rugs in any design, shape and size to the interior design firms who were working with all the upscale hotels and their residential clients. We started private labeling for many designer showrooms. There were no limits to design and colors. 'Custom Looms' became synonymous with handmade custom rugs.
